What will be my contribution to change the world?

At the moment I am at a point in my life, where I feel, that there is more than just going to work everyday – and that I really want to contribute to something in the world and create changes. But as well, I am still asking myself what contribution I can make. Although I have the idea that my field will be education, I do not know what to do and start exactly. All the ideas I have are still quite unconcrete. At Imagine a group of people is coming together that has common questions in mind. Therefore this conference really is something very special, where I can gain new insights and ideas for my next steps in life. Imagine seems to be the place where I can find these people who are searching for their place in the world as well.

Another aspect to be part of Imagine is my passion to design learning processes within large groups that are based on self-organisation of the group. I feel that at Imagine we enable a learning process, where dialogue and deep, meaningful conversations can happen. A collective, large group is coming together and through the process new energy is being created. The energy of this large group brings up new ideas and ways to start the future.

I am really looking forward to meet you at this conference to start meaningful conversations helping us to find out what our next passionate steps will be!

Where is my place in the world?

When I was a little child my parents told me about their “sponsorship” they had for an phillipinien child who was living in an orphanage. With just a few of this money that we need for live, this child can survive, will get food and can go to school. I still remember how touched I was by this littly monthly magazine the organization was sending. So I devided my pocked money into two parts with the same amount and let my parents know that I wanted to let it be send to the girl. I was really angry with them they just found it a great gesture of mine, but never send the money.

Even if this is long time ago, it is still part of my motivation which let me stay and work for peace and fulfillment of human kind potential with AIESEC. I am very happy that almost at the end of my studies, my focus area organisational and human resource management and water management, start to make sense together with my diverse experiences I made in AIESEC.

Imagine was always a special conference for me. The bare name has something magical. So it’s really great for me to be part of the agenda team this time and work together with so many interesting people. I am really excited about the “act” part of our reflect – inspire – act flow. To meet people with similar ideas and to start the first steps, is what I am really looking forward to because…

How to put my ideas into practise?

Where to put it into practise?

What exactly do I want to realise?

And also a very private question:

Where in the world do I want to live?

…are questions where imagine can give new impulses.

Which leads to my personal question for imagine in autumn 2008:

Where is my place in the world?

How can I be part of social change?

After a long and exiting time in AIESEC I finally reached the end of my studies now. What are you doing at this point of your life? You are searching for new challenges. Imagine is on the one hand a place which catalyses this search.

On the other hand, for me there seems to be something fascinating deep in the        core of this conference.

So I decided to stand up for the position of the imagine agenda-manager, because I “smell” something interesting for my future here.

Imagine is based on experimental methods and concepts. The conference is part of a social movement, sowing new ideas in the heads of a young generation. This revolutionary touch is one reason for my commitment – I am looking for a way, how to live my passion (which is actually deeply influenced by the AIESEC-idea) in my future life.

The other reason is simply the project-based working style. You start with some basic ideas and a lot of time to elaborate them. You see the conference growing under your hands, you get inspirations from the world around you and “connect the dots” every time you observe some interesting. Coming clother to THE WEEKEND, time seems to run faster, the flow-feeling is getting more and more intense. You desire to make the conference something special and so your inner burning is becoming a really strong driver. I love this!!!

For Imagine I’m currently working out ideas, how to implement a personality test, based on Carl Gustav Jung’s psychological types theory, into the conference concept. Goal is, to have a tool for personal reflection, which is unfolding intense group-dynamics during the conference.

My most burning question, I will bring to the conference is: How can I be an active part of social change?

Connected to this question is to me: How are cultures evolving? How powerful can small impulses of change become? How is something like “ society “ arising? Were is my place in society? Who am I? Were is happiness in life?

I’m look forwards to discuss and explore this, but also other questions with you!

Your’s Sascha.

Introducing Lars from the selfHUB in Berlin

August 16, 2008

On August 12, as every other day :-) , I am taking the metro to work. Living on the former edge of the Berlin wall, around the corner where Honecker and Ulbricht used to live, I have to travel every day across the city to little Istanbul also known as Kreuzberg where the selfHUB Berlin has its home.

One of the Hub members in Berlin, Lars from Art, Ecology & Education, has recently introduced me to the  “Transition Town Handbook” (see Transition Towns on Wikipedia) and I start reading the foreword and the introduction of the Handbook. The concept uses Permaculture principles, the psychology of social marketing and inclusive dialogue processes like OpenSpace to move people from feeling anxiety and fear in the face of ‘peak oil’, to developing a positive vision and taking practical action to create a more self-reliant existence.

When I arrived at my metro station that day, I sat down on a platform bench to finish reading the introduction and was wondering

“How can that concept be adapted to my social change context of fostering social innovation?”
